Travelling to Azores FAQs

Advice and answers from the Corona Test Centre Team

What do the three colours of the UK’s ‘Traffic Light System’ for travel mean?

  • Red: You must pay for a 10-day stay in a managed quarantine hotel, as well as a pre-departure test and two PCR tests upon return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8).
  • Amber: You will need to quarantine for 10 days, as well as taking a pre-departure test, and two PCR tests on return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8). Optionally you can take a test on Day 5 (Test to Release) to leave quarantine early.
  • Green: You will not need to quarantine on return, but you must take a pre-departure test, and a PCR test on return to the UK on Day 2.

How will the government decide which countries go on the green, amber or red lists?

Countries are assigned to the three lists, based on a range of Covid-19 health metrics, which include figures on population vaccination, infection rates and prevalence of variants. The different traffic light colours indicate the risk in each destination and the associated tests and quarantine periods required. Lists are reassessed every three weeks, to account for changes in each country’s COVID-19 situation.

What must I do when returning to the UK from

Azores is not on the banned travel ‘red list’. Before you enter the UK you must: - take a COVID-19 test up to 3 days before departure. You will need to show a negative test result when you arrive in the UK, including if you are returning home - fill in your passenger locator form up to 48 hours before you enter the UK - book 2 coronavirus (COVID-19) tests for when you quarantine in the UK, unless your job means you’re exempt. You must book these before you travel. You may be able to end your quarantine early by booking a third coronavirus test through Test to Release.

What health and safety tips should I keep in mind during travel to

It is important to check with your travel agent or travel company ahead of planned travel if physical distancing, face coverings and additional hygiene precautionary measures have been implemented. - Expect delays and allow extra time for travel. - Be prepared to queue or take different routes in and around stations and airports to comply with physical distancing measures. - Make sure you plan ahead for your trip and consider packing enough food and drink in case shops and restaurants at transport hubs are not operating. - Try to maintain physical distancing (1-2 meters) from others as much as possible - Wash your hands frequently for at least 20 seconds, particularly before eating and drinking, after being in public areas, using public transport and using the toilet. - Carry an alcohol based hand sanitiser, containing at least 60% alcohol, for use when soap and water is not immediately available. Remember this should be 100mls or less to comply with airport liquid/gel restrictions. - Wearing a face covering may be mandatory in some countries when in public. If it is not, consider wearing a face covering when physical distancing isn't possible in public areas or enclosed spaces.

If you have health or travel insurance, check whether it will cover any expense you incur. - You should get a free UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before leaving the UK. If you already have an EHIC it will still be valid as long as it remains in date.

What are the exceptions to the current UK travel ban?

Whilst the stay in UK restrictions are in place, you are only allowed to leave the UK from England if you have a reasonable excuse. This applies to holders of UK and non-UK passports. Exceptions include: • Work, volunteering, education, medical or visits to provide care, weddings, civil partnerships, funerals, children and dependents • For the full list of exemptions, required documentations, and more information, consult the government website:
