Can You Travel To Iceland?

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, non-essential travel by British citizens from the UK/other non EU/EEA country to Iceland is only permitted, if you:

  • are resident in Iceland, or
  • can adequately demonstrate you have either been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 or previously recovered from COVID-19 infection.

All travellers must pre-register before arrival.

If you have had a full course of the COVID-19 vaccine, you may enter Iceland but need to have adequate proof. For further information on regulations for entry for vaccinated passengers see the relevant FAQ.

If you do not have an acceptable certificate of vaccination or of previous infection, and are not a resident of Iceland, there are only a very limited number of essential reasons for which you will be given permission to travel.

When flying into Iceland without a certificate of vaccination or previous infection you must follow these steps:

  • present a negative PCR taken within 72 hours of your time of departure to Iceland (or get a ISK 100,000 fine for residents or a refusal of entry for visitors)
  • take 2 COVID-19 tests, one on arrival and another 5 to 6 days later,
  • quarantine between tests, until you have the results

Full guidance can be found in English on the Iceland website.

If you are a resident, then you are strongly advised to have a C-122 residence certificate with you at the airport to avoid issues at check-in.

Children who are 16 years or older need to undergo testing at the border, quarantine for 5 days and have a second test as above unless they are fully vaccinated.

Children born in 2005 or later do not need to have a PCR test at the border and are exempt from the obligation to present a negative PCR certificate on arrival. If you are travelling with a child, and need to be quarantined, so will the child. The child will be released from quarantine if your second test on day 5-6 is negative. Children travelling alone do not need to quarantine.

Upon arrival you will be encouraged to sign up to the contact tracing app Rakning C-19. Further information, including how to download it, data usage, privacy and scope is available on the Rakning C-19 website.

Travelling To Iceland FAQs

Advice and answers from the Corona Test Centre Team

What do the three colours of the UK’s ‘Traffic Light System’ for travel mean?

  • Red: You must pay for a 10-day stay in a managed quarantine hotel, as well as taking a pre-departure test (a Fit to Fly test) and two PCR tests upon return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8).
  • Amber: You will need to quarantine for 10 days, as well as taking a pre-departure test (a Fit to Fly test), and two PCR tests on return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8). When you return to the UK,  you can take a test on Day 5 (Test to Release) to leave quarantine early.
  • Green: You will not need to quarantine on return, but you must take a pre-departure test (a Fit to Fly test), and a PCR test on return to the UK on Day 2.

How will the government decide which countries go on the green, amber or red lists?

Countries are assigned to the three lists, based on a range of Covid-19 health metrics, which include figures on population vaccination, infection rates and prevalence of variants. The different traffic light colours indicate the risk in each destination and the associated tests and quarantine periods required. Lists are reassessed every three weeks, to account for changes in each country’s COVID-19 situation.

Will I need a PCR Fit to Fly Certificate to travel to

Iceland

?

The PCR test is the gold standard for testing coronavirus and so is recommended for travel to all countries. For Iceland, only PCR Fit to Fly Certificates are accepted. If you have been vaccinated, Iceland will accept this as proof.

Will I need an Antigen Fit to Fly Certificate to travel to

Iceland

?

Iceland accepts vaccination as an entry requirement and so you may not need to provide a PCR or Antigen Fit to Fly Certificate. However, to ensure that you and the people you meet when travelling are safe, we always recommend taking a PCR or Antigen test before travel.

Will I need a Day 2 test or Day 2 and 8 when I return to the UK?

Iceland is currently on the green list, this means that you will need a Day 2 PCR test. You will need to buy this before you travel to the UK and use the reference code on your passenger location form. You do not need to quarantine on arrival unless you test positive. Please note that the travel restrictions are subject to change at very short notice.

I’m vaccinated, what tests do I need?

Iceland is currently on the green list, this means that you will need a Day 2 PCR test, even though you are double vaccinated. You will need to buy this before you travel to the UK and use the reference code on your passenger location form. You do not need to quarantine on arrival unless you test positive. Please note that the travel restrictions are subject to change at very short notice.

Can I enter

Iceland

with a double vaccination certificate?

Iceland accepts vaccination as an entry requirement and so you may not need to provide a PCR Fit to Fly Certificate

What happens if I have visited another country before flying back to the UK from

Iceland

?

The government advice for passengers travelling from Iceland is that if you have visited another country in the 10 days before you arrive in the UK that is a higher risk than Iceland, you must follow the travel guidance for the highest risk country you visited.

What else will I need to return to the UK?

For all countries, including Iceland, you will need to take an Antigen Fit to Fly test before departing for the UK. This can be bought at Corona Test Centre’s to take with you on your travels.
