Can You Travel To Mongolia?

It is currently not possible for British nationals without long-stay visas, residence permits or business visas for Mongolia to enter Mongolia. You should contact the Mongolian Embassy in London for the most up-to-date advice on entry requirements. All scheduled international commercial flights and rail are suspended. All road border crossings to and from Russia are closed to foreign nationals. Borders between China and Mongolia are closed.

The Mongolian government has indicated it may allow foreign nationals to travel to Mongolia on incoming charter flights if they meet certain criteria (a valid long-stay visa, permanent residency or short term business visas). All incoming passengers are required to provide evidence of a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken no more than 72 hours before arrival and either:

  • Present valid evidence of having received a full vaccination course against COVID-19 at least 14 days before arriving in Mongolia. Or,
  • Undertake 7 days quarantine in an approved hotel. PCR tests will be taken on the 6th day of quarantine. No further isolation will be required if those tests return negative results

Details of quarantine hotels can be found here and here.

Local Measures
Precautionary measures introduced by the Mongolian authorities include:

  • restrictions on public gatherings
  • businesses will operate between 07:00-20:00
  • the suspension of all scheduled international commercial air and rail routes
  • the closure to foreign nationals of road crossings between Mongolia and Russia
  • the closure of all borders between China and Mongolia until further notice
  • the cancellation of all domestic flights

In addition to the above, the Government of Mongolia has placed the country under an “Orange Level” status, or “partial heightened state of readiness”. Orange restrictions include a ban on gatherings and a requirement for anyone travelling between provinces to provide evidence of having been fully vaccinated at least 14 days previously.

Travelling To Mongolia FAQs

Advice and answers from the Corona Test Centre Team

What do the three colours of the UK’s ‘Traffic Light System’ for travel mean?

  • Red: You must pay for a 10-day stay in a managed quarantine hotel, as well as taking a pre-departure test (a Fit to Fly test) and two PCR tests upon return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8).
  • Amber: You will need to quarantine for 10 days, as well as taking a pre-departure test (a Fit to Fly test), and two PCR tests on return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8). When you return to the UK,  you can take a test on Day 5 (Test to Release) to leave quarantine early.
  • Green: You will not need to quarantine on return, but you must take a pre-departure test (a Fit to Fly test), and a PCR test on return to the UK on Day 2.

How will the government decide which countries go on the green, amber or red lists?

Countries are assigned to the three lists, based on a range of Covid-19 health metrics, which include figures on population vaccination, infection rates and prevalence of variants. The different traffic light colours indicate the risk in each destination and the associated tests and quarantine periods required. Lists are reassessed every three weeks, to account for changes in each country’s COVID-19 situation.

Will I need a PCR Fit to Fly Certificate to travel to

Mongolia

?

The PCR test is the gold standard for testing coronavirus and so is recommended for travel to all countries. For Mongolia, only PCR Fit to Fly Certificates are accepted.

Will I need an Antigen Fit to Fly Certificate to travel to

Mongolia

?

The PCR test is the gold standard for testing coronavirus and so is recommended for travel to all countries. For Mongolia, only PCR Fit to Fly Certificates are accepted. You will not be able to use an Antigen Fit to Fly Certificate to enter Mongolia but you will be able to use one to return to the UK.

Will I need a Day 2 test or Day 2 and 8 when I return to the UK?

Mongoliais currently on the red list, this means that you will need a Day 2 PCR test and a Day 8 PCR test. You will need to buy this before you travel to the UK and use the reference code on your passenger location form. You can book these tests online, but you will also have to arrange accommodation at a government chosen hotel on your arrival into the UK. Please note that the travel restrictions are subject to change at very short notice.

I’m vaccinated, what tests do I need?

Mongolia is currently on the red list. Even though you are vaccinated, you will still need a Day 2 PCR test and a Day 8 PCR test. You will need to buy this before you travel to the UK and use the reference code on your passenger location form. You can book these tests online, but you will also have to arrange accommodation at a government chosen hotel on your arrival into the UK. Please note that the travel restrictions are subject to change at very short notice.

Can I enter

Mongolia

with a double vaccination certificate?

Mongolia does not accept vaccination as an entry requirement and so you will need to provide a PCR Fit to Fly Certificate

What happens if I have visited another country before flying back to the UK from

Mongolia

?

The government advice for passengers travelling from Mongolia is that if you have visited another country in the 10 days before you arrive in the UK that is a higher risk than Mongolia, you must follow the travel guidance for the highest risk country you visited.

What else will I need to return to the UK?

For all countries, including Mongolia, you will need to take an Antigen Fit to Fly test before departing for the UK. This can be bought at Corona Test Centre’s to take with you on your travels.
