Can You Travel To New Zealand?

The New Zealand border is currently closed to almost all arrivals.

Travellers to New Zealand will need to register on the Managed Isolation Allocation System as the first step to securing their place in a managed isolation facility. Before you book your flights, you need to register for a voucher for managed isolation. Your voucher allocates you a place in a managed isolation facility. For more information see ‘Secure your place in managed isolation’.

Local Measures
COVID-19 Alert Levels in New Zealand are subject to change at short notice and can apply locally or nationally.

You can find detailed information on current COVID-19 alert levels and the restriction measures that are being enforced on the New Zealand Government website.

Wearing a face mask on all public transport and domestic flights in New Zealand is legally required at COVID Levels 1 and 2. Physical distancing is recommended in public places. The government also encourages people to keep track of their movements and who they have seen to help with contact tracing. The NZ COVID Tracer app is available to download for this purpose with all shops and businesses displaying their QR codes for scanning. Detailed information on face coverings is available from the New Zealand government.

The Alert Levels may be applied at a town, city, territorial local authority, regional or national level.

You should monitor alert levels by reviewing the New Zealand government COVID website for the latest information where you are and comply with these measures and other advice from local authorities. You can also check restrictions and health updates on the New Zealand Ministry of Health website.

Measures may include:

  • Restrictions on numbers of people at non-work gatherings, in shops, cafes, restaurants and other places of public gathering, and on visitors to private residences
  • Physical distancing of 2 metres from people you do not know when out in public or in retail stores and 1 metre physical distancing in controlled environments like workplaces, where practicable
  • Restrictions on domestic transport, inter-regional travel and use of public transport
  • Restrictions on schools, business, recreation activities operating restrictions
  • Face masks on public transport and in high risk, crowded areas

Travelling To New Zealand FAQs

Advice and answers from the Corona Test Centre Team

What do the three colours of the UK’s ‘Traffic Light System’ for travel mean?

  • Red: You must pay for a 10-day stay in a managed quarantine hotel, as well as taking a pre-departure test (a Fit to Fly test) and two PCR tests upon return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8).
  • Amber: You will need to quarantine for 10 days, as well as taking a pre-departure test (a Fit to Fly test), and two PCR tests on return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8). When you return to the UK,  you can take a test on Day 5 (Test to Release) to leave quarantine early.
  • Green: You will not need to quarantine on return, but you must take a pre-departure test (a Fit to Fly test), and a PCR test on return to the UK on Day 2.

How will the government decide which countries go on the green, amber or red lists?

Countries are assigned to the three lists, based on a range of Covid-19 health metrics, which include figures on population vaccination, infection rates and prevalence of variants. The different traffic light colours indicate the risk in each destination and the associated tests and quarantine periods required. Lists are reassessed every three weeks, to account for changes in each country’s COVID-19 situation.

Will I need a PCR Fit to Fly Certificate to travel to

New Zealand

?

The PCR test is the gold standard for testing coronavirus and so is recommended for travel to all countries. For New Zealand, only PCR Fit to Fly Certificates are accepted.

Will I need an Antigen Fit to Fly Certificate to travel to

New Zealand

?

The PCR test is the gold standard for testing coronavirus and so is recommended for travel to all countries. For New Zealand, only PCR Fit to Fly Certificates are accepted. You will not be able to use an Antigen Fit to Fly Certificate to enter New Zealand but you will be able to use one to return to the UK.

Will I need a Day 2 test or Day 2 and 8 when I return to the UK?

New Zealand is currently on the green list, this means that you will need a Day 2 PCR test. You will need to buy this before you travel to the UK and use the reference code on your passenger location form. You do not need to quarantine on arrival unless you test positive. Please note that the travel restrictions are subject to change at very short notice.

I’m vaccinated, what tests do I need?

New Zealand is currently on the green list, this means that you will need a Day 2 PCR test, even though you are double vaccinated. You will need to buy this before you travel to the UK and use the reference code on your passenger location form. You do not need to quarantine on arrival unless you test positive. Please note that the travel restrictions are subject to change at very short notice.

Can I enter

New Zealand

with a double vaccination certificate?

New Zealand does not accept vaccination as an entry requirement and so you will need to provide a PCR Fit to Fly Certificate

What happens if I have visited another country before flying back to the UK from

New Zealand

?

The government advice for passengers travelling from New Zealand is that if you have visited another country in the 10 days before you arrive in the UK that is a higher risk than New Zealand, you must follow the travel guidance for the highest risk country you visited.

What else will I need to return to the UK?

For all countries, including New Zealand, you will need to take an Antigen Fit to Fly test before departing for the UK. This can be bought at Corona Test Centre’s to take with you on your travels.
