You will need to quarantine for 10 days unless you've been fully vaccinated in the UK*, as well as taking a pre-departure test before you arrive in the UK (a Return PCR or Antigen Fit to Fly test), and two PCR tests on return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8). When you return to the UK, you can take a test on Day 5 (Test to Release) to leave quarantine early.
*If you were fully vaccinated in the UK at least 14 days ago, you do not need to quarantine, but still need to take a pre-departure test before arriving in the UK (a Return PCR or Antigen Fit to Fly test), and one PCR test on return to the UK (Day 2).

Welcome to Seoul

With its official name of Seoul Special City, Seoul was never going to be an ordinary place to visit. A fascinating combination of an ultra-modern, technology-driven society, pioneering fashion and trends, and a surprisingly resilient set of traditions and cultural history, Seoul is one of Asia’s most interesting cities.

Seoul is one of the busiest cities in the world — with a population density twice as high as New York City! Yet despite its status as a global city, Seoul’s population is overwhelmingly South Korean, with a foreign presence of less than 5%, most of whom are Chinese citizens of Korean ancestry.

Its history dates back approximately 2,000 years, but Seoul was a victim of colonialism and war before emerging as the ‘smart city’ it is today.

Seoul has been a major destination for tourists, and had a huge impact on global affairs, for decades. It is a semi-regular host city for global events, including the Summer Olympics in 1988 and the Football World Cup in 2002.

Seoul: The Must See Sights

Seoul is blessed with five gorgeous historic palaces, but Changdeokgung is the jewel in the crown. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s a memorable vision set amidst gorgeous woodlands. Don’t miss the manicured lawns and ornate water features of the Huwon Secret Garden.

For the best view of the city, climb the magnificent Namsan Mountain and gaze out across the stunning panorama from North Seoul Tower. Don’t worry, if the climb sounds too much there is a handy cable car, too.

Back on ground level, Korean street food has to be tasted to be believed, and the best place to go to get an authentic taste of Seoul’s vibrant culinary scene is Gwangjang Market. One of the largest and oldest in the city, it offers a real insight into the traditions of South Korean life.

Lastly, Dongdaemun is the beating heart of Seoul’s modern 24-hour consumer culture. Part shopping centre, part cultural hub, it is an edgy, fast-paced, exciting spot and well worth a visit.

Can You Travel To South Korea?

All foreign nationals arriving in South Korea are required to provide a negative PCR test declaration, issued within 72 hours of departure. More details can be found on the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in London website.

All arrivals – regardless of nationality and length of stay – are also required to be tested for coronavirus (COVID-19) after entering South Korea. Arrivals will be taken for testing and must remain at the testing facility until a negative result has been secured.

If you have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, you can apply for a ‘quarantine exemption’. Please see the relevant FAQ for vaccinated travellers for further details.

Even if you have a quarantine exemption, on arrival in Korea you will need to submit a negative PCR test issued within 72 hours prior to departure. You will also need to take PCR tests on arrival and on day 6 or 7, and comply with active health monitoring through the Korean government app.

Quarantine is mandatory if you do not have a quarantine exemption. Korean nationals and long-term foreign visitors with an Alien Registration Card and Korean residence may self-quarantine at home for 14 days. All other foreign short-term travellers must quarantine at a government-designated facility for 14 days. Individuals are required to pay a daily charge of 120,000KRW (approximately £81) while in government quarantine facilities.

Individuals from the UK will be tested for COVID-19 on arrival and will need to participate with an active monitoring system via regular calls with a health expert and a specialised mobile App.

Make sure you have with you a mobile telephone with the roaming function enabled, and/or the telephone number of a friend, relative or contact who can update the authorities daily on your state of health. A hotel telephone number will not be accepted. Immigration authorities will undertake a test call before travellers leave the airport, and any individual unable to verify their contact details may be denied entry to South Korea.

Local Measures
Korea has a QR code-based registration system for patrons at restaurants, clubs, and other entertainment facilities across the country that are considered high risk for COVID-19. This system enables the government to conduct contact tracing as COVID cases are identified. Information on this system and Korea’s “distancing in daily life” philosophy are available on the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s COVID-19 Portal.

Travelling To South Korea FAQs

Advice and answers from the Corona Test Centre Team

What do the three colours of the UK’s ‘Traffic Light System’ for travel mean?

  • Red: You must pay for a 10-day stay in a managed quarantine hotel, as well as taking a pre-departure test (a Fit to Fly test) and two PCR tests upon return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8).
  • Amber: You will need to quarantine for 10 days, as well as taking a pre-departure test (a Fit to Fly test), and two PCR tests on return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8). When you return to the UK,  you can take a test on Day 5 (Test to Release) to leave quarantine early.
  • Green: You will not need to quarantine on return, but you must take a pre-departure test (a Fit to Fly test), and a PCR test on return to the UK on Day 2.

How will the government decide which countries go on the green, amber or red lists?

Countries are assigned to the three lists, based on a range of Covid-19 health metrics, which include figures on population vaccination, infection rates and prevalence of variants. The different traffic light colours indicate the risk in each destination and the associated tests and quarantine periods required. Lists are reassessed every three weeks, to account for changes in each country’s COVID-19 situation.

Will I need a PCR Fit to Fly Certificate to travel to

South Korea

?

The PCR test is the gold standard for testing coronavirus and so is recommended for travel to all countries. For South Korea, only PCR Fit to Fly Certificates are accepted.

Will I need an Antigen Fit to Fly Certificate to travel to

South Korea

?

The PCR test is the gold standard for testing coronavirus and so is recommended for travel to all countries. For South Korea, only PCR Fit to Fly Certificates are accepted. You will not be able to use an Antigen Fit to Fly Certificate to enter South Korea but you will be able to use one to return to the UK.

Will I need a Day 2 test or Day 2 and 8 when I return to the UK?

South Koreais currently on the amber list, this means that you will need a Day 2 PCR test and a Day 8 PCR test. You will need to buy this before you travel to the UK and use the reference code on your passenger location form. You will need to quarantine on arrival for 10 days. If you would like the opportunity to leave quarantine early, you can also book a Test to Release test. Please note that the travel restrictions are subject to change at very short notice.

I’m vaccinated, what tests do I need?

South Korea is currently on the amber list, this means that you will need a Day 2 PCR test and a Day 8 PCR test. However, because you have both vaccinations, you can return to the UK and only take a Day 2 PCR test. You will need to buy this before you travel to the UK and use the reference code on your passenger location form. You will not need to quarantine on arrival for 10 days (unless you test positive). Please note that the travel restrictions are subject to change at very short notice.

Can I enter

South Korea

with a double vaccination certificate?

South Korea does not accept vaccination as an entry requirement and so you will need to provide a PCR Fit to Fly Certificate

What happens if I have visited another country before flying back to the UK from

South Korea

?

The government advice for passengers travelling from South Korea is that if you have visited another country in the 10 days before you arrive in the UK that is a higher risk than South Korea, you must follow the travel guidance for the highest risk country you visited.

What else will I need to return to the UK?

For all countries, including South Korea, you will need to take an Antigen Fit to Fly test before departing for the UK. This can be bought at Corona Test Centre’s to take with you on your travels.
