Travelling To South Africa FAQs

Advice and answers from the Corona Test Centre Team

What do the three colours of the UK’s ‘Traffic Light System’ for travel mean?

  • Red: You must pay for a 10-day stay in a managed quarantine hotel, as well as taking a pre-departure test (a Fit to Fly test) and two PCR tests upon return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8).
  • Amber: You will need to quarantine for 10 days, as well as taking a pre-departure test (a Fit to Fly test), and two PCR tests on return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8). When you return to the UK,  you can take a test on Day 5 (Test to Release) to leave quarantine early.
  • Green: You will not need to quarantine on return, but you must take a pre-departure test (a Fit to Fly test), and a PCR test on return to the UK on Day 2.

How will the government decide which countries go on the green, amber or red lists?

Countries are assigned to the three lists, based on a range of Covid-19 health metrics, which include figures on population vaccination, infection rates and prevalence of variants. The different traffic light colours indicate the risk in each destination and the associated tests and quarantine periods required. Lists are reassessed every three weeks, to account for changes in each country’s COVID-19 situation.

What must I do when returning to the UK from

South Africa

?

South Africa is on the banned travel ‘red list’.
You cannot currently enter the UK if you’ve been in or through a country on the banned travel list (sometimes known as the ‘red list’) in the last 10 days, unless you’re British, Irish or you have the right to live in the UK.
If you travel in or through a country on the ‘red list’ in the 10 days before you arrive in England, you’ll need to make a booking to quarantine in a managed quarantine hotel. Your hotel booking will include 2 coronavirus tests. Find more information here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/booking-and-staying-in-a-quarantine-hotel-when-you-arrive-in-england

Before you enter the UK you must also:

  • take a COVID-19 test up to 3 days before departure. You will need to show a negative test result when you arrive in the UK
  • fill in your passenger locator form up to 48 hours before you enter the UK

What health and safety tips should I keep in mind during travel to

South Africa

?

It is important to check with your travel agent or travel company ahead of planned travel if physical distancing, face coverings and additional hygiene precautionary measures have been implemented.

  • Expect delays and allow extra time for travel.
  • Be prepared to queue or take different routes in and around stations and airports to comply with physical distancing measures.
  • Make sure you plan ahead for your trip and consider packing enough food and drink in case shops and restaurants at transport hubs are not operating.
  • Try to maintain physical distancing (1-2 meters) from others as much as possible
  • Wash your hands frequently for at least 20 seconds, particularly before eating and drinking, after being in public areas, using public transport and using the toilet.
  • Carry an alcohol based hand sanitiser, containing at least 60% alcohol, for use when soap and water is not immediately available. Remember this should be 100mls or less to comply with airport liquid/gel restrictions.
  • Wearing a face covering may be mandatory in some countries when in public. If it is not, consider wearing a face covering when physical distancing isn't possible in public areas or enclosed spaces.

How can I access medical help while abroad in

South Africa

?

  • PCR COVID-19 tests are widely available from private medical facilities and some chemists in South Africa. If you need help finding a COVID-19 PCR test provider you should call The National Institute for Communicable Diseases helpline (+27) 0800 029 999 for advice on possible testing facilities, or consult the online advice.
  • For contact details for local doctors, consult the list of healthcare providers provided by the government: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/south-africa-list-of-medical-facilities
  • If you think you have COVID-19 symptoms, you should contact your health insurer for advice.
