Amber List
You will need to quarantine for 10 days unless you've been fully vaccinated in the UK*, as well as taking a pre-departure test before you arrive in the UK (a Return PCR or Antigen Fit to Fly test), and two PCR tests on return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8). When you return to the UK, you can take a test on Day 5 (Test to Release) to leave quarantine early.
*If you were fully vaccinated in the UK at least 14 days ago, you do not need to quarantine, but still need to take a pre-departure test before arriving in the UK (a Return PCR or Antigen Fit to Fly test), and one PCR test on return to the UK (Day 2).

Welcome to Tokyo

No city is quite like Tokyo. Here, an ultra-modern, tech-led culture meets long-standing Buddhist spirituality - few cities offer as many contrast all rolled into one.

Whether passing through a traffic intersection with 1,000 other people, gazing over the city from an observation deck, or strolling in a romantic park, the city holds many surprises.

Tokyo’s history dates back to 1446, when Ōta Dōkan began building Edo Castle on the northern shore of what is now Tokyo Bay. In 1590, this castle passed to Tokugawa Ieyasu, who established his new Shōgunate following a victory in the Battle of Sekigahara — an era now known as the Edo period and renowned for its art.

Edo soon became the political and cultural centre of the country, along with Kyōto. It was given the new name Tokyo, meaning "Eastern Capital" in 1868, when the Shōgunate was abolished.

During World War II, Tokyo was subjected to numerous air raids by the U.S., leaving close to half of the city destroyed. After the end of the American occupation, a rapid economic upswing followed, accompanied by a renewed increase in population.

Tokyo: The Must See Sights

Tokyo is the industrial, commercial, educational and cultural centre of Japan. But many visitors travel there to be swept up in the unique atmosphere this city provides — and to enjoy the great food!

In addition to modern attractions such as the Tokyo Tower or Tokyo Skytree, the historical and spiritual sites of the Imperial Palace, Meiji Shrine, Ueno Park and Asakusa Kannon Temple should all go on your to-do list.

That said, there’s no better way to spend the day than wandering around Tokyo’s dynamic and exciting districts — each with its own character and must-do agenda. Harajuku is where to head for local fashion and eccentric subculture. Akihabara is a deep-dive into Tokyo’s love for anime and gadgets. And the — comparatively quiet — area of Kichijoji gives a sense of suburban Japanese life.

Spring is the best time to visit, when the cherry blossom trees are alive with colour.

Can You Travel To Japan?

Foreign nationals who wish to enter Japan for work or study but do not have existing resident status and who have visited the UK in the past 14 days are currently not permitted to enter until further notice, other than in exceptional circumstances. This guidance also applies to foreign nationals in possession of visas issued under the previous individual and Global Residence Tracks.

Further details are available on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, or via Japan’s Visa Information Hotline on +44 (0)800 041 8412. Alternatively, contact your nearest Japanese Embassy for more information, including if you believe you qualify for exceptional circumstances.

All those entering Japan must provide written evidence of a negative COVID-19 test result conducted within the 72 hours before their flight departure time. Japanese authorities have stated that they only accept test samples taken as either 'Nasopharyngeal (Swab/Smear)/Nasopharynx' or 'Saliva'. A mixture of samples such as 'nasal and throat' or 'pharyngeal and nasal' or 'Nasopharyngeal and throat' is not acceptable.

All passengers arriving in Japan are required to complete a health questionnaire before disembarkation, including contact details. They are then required to undergo a COVID-19 test at the airport. You will be asked to wait for the test results at the airport before moving to your accommodation.

Travellers arriving from the UK are requested to spend 6 days in self-isolation at a government-provided hotel, with further COVID-19 tests on the third and sixth days. If the tests are negative they will be allowed to continue 14 days’ self-isolation.

Local Measures

  • The Government of Japan announced that the state of emergency declaration covering Tokyo, Osaka, Hyogo, Kyoto, Aichi, Fukuoka, Hokkaido, Okayama, and Hiroshima has been lifted.
  • The prefectural declaration in Okinawa was extended through July 11 due to continuing concerns related to available hospital capacity.
  • Tokyo, Osaka, Hyogo, Kyoto, Aichi, Fukuoka, and Hokkaido are now under a quasi-state of emergency declaration with specific measures put into place to limit the spread of COVID-19. These restrictions include requests that restaurants close by 8:00 PM and only serve alcohol until 7:00 PM.
  • Other prefectures also have restrictions in place. Some businesses will be closed; others may continue to operate with reduced hours. Measures encouraging social distancing, wearing masks in public, avoiding closed spaces, and other basic precautions remain in place. Controls may be further strengthened as necessary. You should follow the instructions of your local authority.

Travelling To Japan FAQs

Advice and answers from the Corona Test Centre Team

What do the three colours of the UK’s ‘Traffic Light System’ for travel mean?

  • Red: You must pay for a 10-day stay in a managed quarantine hotel, as well as taking a pre-departure test (a Fit to Fly test) and two PCR tests upon return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8).
  • Amber: You will need to quarantine for 10 days, as well as taking a pre-departure test (a Fit to Fly test), and two PCR tests on return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8). When you return to the UK,  you can take a test on Day 5 (Test to Release) to leave quarantine early.
  • Green: You will not need to quarantine on return, but you must take a pre-departure test (a Fit to Fly test), and a PCR test on return to the UK on Day 2.

How will the government decide which countries go on the green, amber or red lists?

Countries are assigned to the three lists, based on a range of Covid-19 health metrics, which include figures on population vaccination, infection rates and prevalence of variants. The different traffic light colours indicate the risk in each destination and the associated tests and quarantine periods required. Lists are reassessed every three weeks, to account for changes in each country’s COVID-19 situation.

Will I need a PCR Fit to Fly Certificate to travel to

Japan

?

The PCR test is the gold standard for testing coronavirus and so is recommended for travel to all countries. For Japan, only PCR Fit to Fly Certificates are accepted.

Will I need an Antigen Fit to Fly Certificate to travel to

Japan

?

The PCR test is the gold standard for testing coronavirus and so is recommended for travel to all countries. For Japan, only PCR Fit to Fly Certificates are accepted. You will not be able to use an Antigen Fit to Fly Certificate to enter Japan but you will be able to use one to return to the UK.

Will I need a Day 2 test or Day 2 and 8 when I return to the UK?

Japanis currently on the amber list, this means that you will need a Day 2 PCR test and a Day 8 PCR test. You will need to buy this before you travel to the UK and use the reference code on your passenger location form. You will need to quarantine on arrival for 10 days. If you would like the opportunity to leave quarantine early, you can also book a Test to Release test. Please note that the travel restrictions are subject to change at very short notice.

I’m vaccinated, what tests do I need?

Japan is currently on the amber list, this means that you will need a Day 2 PCR test and a Day 8 PCR test. However, because you have both vaccinations, you can return to the UK and only take a Day 2 PCR test. You will need to buy this before you travel to the UK and use the reference code on your passenger location form. You will not need to quarantine on arrival for 10 days (unless you test positive). Please note that the travel restrictions are subject to change at very short notice.

Can I enter

Japan

with a double vaccination certificate?

Japan does not accept vaccination as an entry requirement and so you will need to provide a PCR Fit to Fly Certificate

What happens if I have visited another country before flying back to the UK from

Japan

?

The government advice for passengers travelling from Japan is that if you have visited another country in the 10 days before you arrive in the UK that is a higher risk than Japan, you must follow the travel guidance for the highest risk country you visited.

What else will I need to return to the UK?

For all countries, including Japan, you will need to take an Antigen Fit to Fly test before departing for the UK. This can be bought at Corona Test Centre’s to take with you on your travels.
