As overseas travel can take place from 17 May, the government has devised a traffic light system which classifies international travel destinations based on Covid-19 risks. Countries may be red, amber, or green. Each colour corresponds to specific rules when returning to the UK.
What do the three colours of the UK’s ‘Traffic Light System’ for travel mean?
- Red: You must pay for a 10-day stay in a managed quarantine hotel, as well as a pre-departure test and two PCR tests upon return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8).
- Amber: You will need to quarantine for 10 days, as well as taking a pre-departure test, and two PCR tests on return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8). Optionally you can take a test on Day 5 (Test to Release) to leave quarantine early.
- Green: You will not need to quarantine on return, but you must take a pre-departure test, and a PCR test on return to the UK on Day 2.
How will the government decide which countries go on the green, amber or red lists?
Countries are assigned to the three lists, based on a range of Covid-19 health metrics, which include figures on population vaccination, infection rates and prevalence of variants. The different traffic light colours indicate the risk in each destination and the associated tests and quarantine periods required. Lists are reassessed every three weeks, to account for changes in each country’s COVID-19 situation.

A throat and nose swab sample is taken by one of our healthcare professionals at one of our clinics in London, Watford, Manchester and Newcastle.

Is your PCR test accepted worldwide?
Yes, it’s accepted by all international destinations. Our real time PCR (RT-PCR) method is fully certified and accredited by Public Health England. This test is trusted by airlines and embassies.
Does my test include a Fit to Fly Certificate?
A PCR Fit to Fly test or Antigen Fit to Fly test includes your Fit to Fly status. This is the best test to take if you are travelling. We do not issue test result certificates with fit to fly status if you test positive for COVID-19.
How soon before my flight should I be tested?
Time windows are normally given by your airline or the country you are flying to. For example, an antigen test is usually required within a 48 hour time window meaning that your swab needs to be taken within 48 hours of your flight. We recommend you check your specific destination requirements here.
How do I receive my results and what information is shown on the certificate?
Your test results will be sent to you securely by text and email including a PDF you can download. Your certificate will show your full name, date of birth, passport number, date and time of test, and issue date. It will also be signed by our Medical Director, Dr. Jeremy Harris GMC: 3076541.
What are the possible results of my Fit to Fly test?
Negative: You do not have any evidence of an active COVID-19 infection.
Positive: The virus that causes COVID-19 has been detected in your test. You will need to self-isolate for 10 days in accordance with government guidance.
Unclear: On rare occasions, it might not be possible to say if you had the virus when your test was done. In the event of this happening, you’ll need to come in again for a retest. We offer all retests free of charge.
