What does the UK's "Traffic Light System" for travel mean and what do I have to do?

As of October 4th, the government has changed the current traffic light system which classifies international travel destinations based on Covid-19 risks. The rules for international travel to England have changed from the red, amber, green traffic light system to a single red list of countries and simplified travel measures for arrivals from the rest of the world.

What do the different categories of the UK's 'Traffic Light System' for travel mean?

  • Red: You must pay for a 10-day stay in a managed quarantine hotel, as well as a pre-departure test and two PCR tests upon return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8). You will only be allowed to enter the UK if you are a British or Irish national or you have residence rights in the UK.
  • Rest of the world (unvaccinated): You will need to quarantine for 10 days, as well as taking a pre-departure test, and two PCR tests on return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8). Optionally you can take a test on Day 5 (Test to Release) to leave quarantine early.
  • Rest of the world (vaccinated): You will not need to quarantine on return, and you do not need to take a pre-departure test. You are required to take a lateral flow test or PCR test on or before Day 2 of your return to the UK.

How will the government decide which countries go on the red list?

Countries are assigned to the red lists, based on a range of Covid-19 health metrics, which include figures on population vaccination, infection rates and prevalence of variants. The red light category indicates a high level of risk in a given destination and the associated tests and quarantine periods required. Lists are reassessed every three weeks, to account for changes in each country’s COVID-19 situation.

Before you travel to England you must:

Red List

  • Complete a passenger locator form
  • Take a COVID-19 test
  • Book a quarantine hotel package (including 2 COVID-19 tests)

Rest of world (unvaccinated)

  • Complete a passenger locator form
  • Take a COVID-19 test
  • Book Day 2 and Day 8 COVID-19 PCR tests (to be taken after arrival in England)

Rest of world (vaccinated)

  • Complete a passenger locator form
  • Book a Day 2 COVID-19 test (lateral flow test or PCR test)

On arrival in England you must:

Red List

  • Quarantine in a managed hotel, including 2 COVID-19 tests

Rest of world (unvaccinated)

  • Quarantine at home/place you are staying for 10 days
  • Take a COVID-19 PCR test on/before Day 2 and on/after Day 8
  • You may be able to end quarantine early through 'Test to Release'

Rest of world (vaccinated)

  • Take a COVID-19 PCR or lateral flow test on/before Day 2 after you arrive
  • You do not need to quarantine unless the test result is positive.

Can I buy tests for multiple passengers under the same order?

Yes, you can buy several tests at the same time, all with the same email address/contact details. The tests are only assigned to an individual traveller at the point of activation, which is the first step when using the test. If you are buying clinic tests, you will need to separately.

Can I buy this test for someone else?

Yes. The test is only linked to an individual when it is activated. If you are booking a clinic test for someone else, please use their contact details when filling in the forms.

Whose name appears on the certificate?

The name of the person who activates the kit appears on the certificate, not the person who bought or received it.

How long does it take to get my result?

Once you upload the photo of your lateral flow test to us, we aim to validate your test and issue a certificate within 12 hours.

What does this test tell me?

This test will tell you whether or not you are currently carrying SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, regardless of whether you are displaying symptoms. This test is sensitive enough to detect both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals. If found positive, you should immediately follow the guidance provided by the NHS, which we will provided to you with your results.

Those testing positive must seek a confirmatory PCR Test through the NHS Test & Trace program.

What will happen if I test positive?

This means that at the time of taking the test, you probably have the virus.

Even if you have not had symptoms of coronavirus, you must now self-isolate for 10 days from the day after your test date.

You must take a follow up PCR test from NHS T&T to confirm this - this test is free of charge. You can access your confirmatory PCR test by visiting gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test or by calling 119. You may be contacted for contact tracing and to check that you, and those who you live or are travelling with, are self-isolating.

You must not travel, including to leave the UK, during self-isolation.

Contact 111 if you need medical help. In an emergency dial 999.

Can I use this service for Fit to Fly and Test to Release?

No, if you require an Antigen Fit to Fly, click here.

If you require a Fit to fly that must be performed under supervision, please book a clinic Fit to Fly here.

This test is not suitable for Test to Release. Please use our COVID-19 PCR Test to Release test for this purpose - here.

Do I get a certificate with my result?

We issue a certificate alongside your result. The report will show your name, your date of birth, a doctors signature and GMC number, date the sample was taken and your result. This testing is overseen by the clinical advisory team at Corona Test Centre.

Does this test check for past COVID-19 infection?

No, this test checks for current infections only. In order to find out whether you have been exposed to COVID-19 in the past and have developed antibodies, you can take our antibody test.

How do I get my Booking Reference for the Passenger Locator Form?

After you have bought your test, you will be sent an email with your Booking Reference for the Passenger Locator Form. Please look after this number, you will need it for your travel to the UK and to activate your home test.
