What does the UK's "Traffic Light System" for travel mean and what do I have to do?

As of October 4th, the government has changed the current traffic light system which classifies international travel destinations based on Covid-19 risks. The rules for international travel to England have changed from the red, amber, green traffic light system to a single red list of countries and simplified travel measures for arrivals from the rest of the world.

What do the different categories of the UK's 'Traffic Light System' for travel mean?

  • Red: You must pay for a 10-day stay in a managed quarantine hotel, as well as a pre-departure test and two PCR tests upon return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8). You will only be allowed to enter the UK if you are a British or Irish national or you have residence rights in the UK.
  • Rest of the world (unvaccinated): You will need to quarantine for 10 days, as well as taking a pre-departure test, and two PCR tests on return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8). Optionally you can take a test on Day 5 (Test to Release) to leave quarantine early.
  • Rest of the world (vaccinated): You will not need to quarantine on return, and you do not need to take a pre-departure test. You are required to take a lateral flow test or PCR test on or before Day 2 of your return to the UK.

How will the government decide which countries go on the red list?

Countries are assigned to the red lists, based on a range of Covid-19 health metrics, which include figures on population vaccination, infection rates and prevalence of variants. The red light category indicates a high level of risk in a given destination and the associated tests and quarantine periods required. Lists are reassessed every three weeks, to account for changes in each country’s COVID-19 situation.

Before you travel to England you must:

Red List

  • Complete a passenger locator form
  • Take a COVID-19 test
  • Book a quarantine hotel package (including 2 COVID-19 tests)

Rest of world (unvaccinated)

  • Complete a passenger locator form
  • Take a COVID-19 test
  • Book Day 2 and Day 8 COVID-19 PCR tests (to be taken after arrival in England)

Rest of world (vaccinated)

  • Complete a passenger locator form
  • Book a Day 2 COVID-19 test (lateral flow test or PCR test)

On arrival in England you must:

Red List

  • Quarantine in a managed hotel, including 2 COVID-19 tests

Rest of world (unvaccinated)

  • Quarantine at home/place you are staying for 10 days
  • Take a COVID-19 PCR test on/before Day 2 and on/after Day 8
  • You may be able to end quarantine early through 'Test to Release'

Rest of world (vaccinated)

  • Take a COVID-19 PCR or lateral flow test on/before Day 2 after you arrive
  • You do not need to quarantine unless the test result is positive.

What vaccination programmes are recognised in the UK?

The UK continues to recognise vaccination programmes from the UK, EU, and USA. As of October 4, the UK recognises vaccination certificates with a full course of the Oxford/AstraZeneca, Pfizer BioNTech, Moderna or Janssen vaccines from a relevant public health body in Australia, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Bahrain, Brunei, Canada, Dominica, Israel, Japan, Kuwait, Malaysia, New Zealand, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan or the United Arab Emirates (UAE)

Formulations of the 4 listed vaccines, such as AstraZeneca Covishield, AstraZeneca Vaxzevria and Moderna Takeda, qualify as approved vaccines.

You must have had a complete course of an approved vaccine at least 14 days before you arrive in England.

Where 2 doses of a vaccine are required for a full course, you will be able to mix 2 different types of vaccine, for example Oxford/AstraZeneca and Moderna. You are also allowed to have the 2 vaccinations under 2 different approved programmes, for example Australia and Japan, UK and USA, EU and Canada.

What does the test do and how accurate is it?

A PCR test is a nucleic acid test that looks for the genetic code (RNA) of the virus. It will not confirm whether you have had it and have developed an immune response - there are other tests available for that (see our antibody test). It is the gold standard of testing and is 99.9% accurate.

How is the test taken?

A throat and nose swab sample is taken by one of our healthcare professionals at one of our clinics in London, Watford, Manchester and Newcastle.

Where can I get a test?

You can book a PCR test online for any of our clinics in London, Watford, Manchester and Newcastle. At each clinic we have healthcare professionals who administer your tests.

Is your PCR test accepted worldwide?

Yes, it’s accepted by all international destinations. Our real time PCR (RT-PCR) method is fully certified and accredited by Public Health England. This test is trusted by airlines and embassies.

Does a PCR Fit to Fly test include a Fit to Fly Certificate?

A PCR Fit to Fly test includes your Fit to Fly status. This is the best test to take if you are travelling. We do not issue test result certificates with fit to fly status if you test positive for COVID-19.

How soon before my flight should I be tested?

Time windows are normally given by your airline or the country you are flying to. For example, an antigen test is usually required within a 48 hour time window meaning that your swab needs to be taken within 48 hours of your flight. We recommend you check your specific destination requirements here.

How quickly can I get results back?

As fast as 23:59 the same day you take your PCR test if you choose a Same Day turnaround time. We also offer results by 18:00 the next day after your test and 2 days after your test by 18:00. All test samples are analysed 7 days a week and you’ll get your results as soon as they’re released.

How do I receive my results and what information is shown on the certificate?

Your test results will be sent to you securely by text and email including a PDF you can download. Your certificate will show your full name, date of birth, passport number, date and time of test, and issue date. It will also be signed by our Medical Director, Dr. Jeremy Harris GMC: 3076541.

What are the possible results of my PCR Fit to Fly test?

Negative: You do not have any evidence of an active COVID-19 infection.

Positive: The virus that causes COVID-19 has been detected on your swab. You will need to self-isolate for 10 days in accordance with government guidance.

Unclear: On rare occasions, it might not be possible to say if you had the virus when your test was done. In the event of this happening, you’ll need to come in again for a retest. We offer all retests free of charge.

Are you recognised by the UK Government and are you accredited?

We’re a leading UK government recognised provider of all private COVID-19 tests. Our tests are analysed at UKAS accredited labs that comply to ISO15189 and ISO17025 standards.

Do I get certification documents with my my Test Result Certificate?

The Certificate of Accreditation of the lab and other approval documents, as well as the clinical validation data for the test itself are provided to you with your test result certificate in the email you receive. These comply with the necessary requirements for international travel even to very strict destinations like Hong Kong, China, South Korea & Japan.
