What does the UK's "Traffic Light System" for travel mean and what do I have to do?

As overseas travel can take place from 17 May, the government has devised a traffic light system which classifies international travel destinations based on Covid-19 risks. Countries may be red, amber, or green. Each colour corresponds to specific rules when returning to the UK.

What do the three colours of the UK’s ‘Traffic Light System’ for travel mean?

  • Red: You must pay for a 10-day stay in a managed quarantine hotel, as well as a pre-departure test and two PCR tests upon return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8).
  • Amber: You will need to quarantine for 10 days, as well as taking a pre-departure test, and two PCR tests on return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8). Optionally you can take a test on Day 5 (Test to Release) to leave quarantine early.
  • Green: You will not need to quarantine on return, but you must take a pre-departure test, and a PCR test on return to the UK on Day 2.

How will the government decide which countries go on the green, amber or red lists?

Countries are assigned to the three lists, based on a range of Covid-19 health metrics, which include figures on population vaccination, infection rates and prevalence of variants. The different traffic light colours indicate the risk in each destination and the associated tests and quarantine periods required. Lists are reassessed every three weeks, to account for changes in each country’s COVID-19 situation.

What is the difference between the PCR Fit to Fly & Green List Travel Pack and Antigen Fit to Fly & Green List Travel Pack

Most countries require a PCR Fit to Fly test pre-departure, however a very small number of countries will accept an Antigen Fit to Fly pre-departure test. We have designed two different Green List travel packs to cater to these differing requirements. Please check your destination to determine if a PCR or Antigen outbound Fit to Fly test is accepted here.

What is the Day 2 test and why isn’t there a Day 8 test?

If you’re arriving in the UK from a Green listed country you do not need to undergo a period of quarantine, but are still required by law to take a PCR test 2 days after your arrival. The Day 8 PCR quarantine test is only applicable for arrivals from amber listed countries.

Can I get a refund for unused tests in a bundle?

We regret that due to government guidelines we are unable to issue refunds for tests purchased online. Day 2 and 8 tests in particular contain booking reference numbers for passenger locator forms and those are non-retractable and form part of the service we provide. Other test types, whilst unable to be refunded may be used at a later date by contacting support and providing details of your journey when you are ready to use them.

How is a PCR test taken?

A throat and nose swab sample is taken using the kit provided. We have clear instructions on how to do this that come with your test bundle, with video tutorials available from the links in the instruction leaflet.

How is an Antigen test taken?

We use a range of antigen tests certified for home use. Our tests are predominantly swab based but we also sell saliva based antigen tests when available. All home antigen tests are self administered using the instructions provided with the test.

How quickly can I get my PCR results back?

For postal returned samples you will get your result within 24 hours of our lab receiving your sample (please be sure to make the Priority Post Box cut-off time otherwise your sample is sent the following day by Royal Mail). We also offer in-clinic testing with faster results (same day services available). All test samples are analysed 7 days a week. We recommend you check your specific destination requirements here.

How quickly can I get my Antigen results back?

Our lateral flow antigen test is self-administered, and your results appear on the test cassette within 20 minutes of taking your sample. If you are using this test for your UK return Fit to Fly proof, please be sure to register your results online to obtain your verified results certificate required for travel. The instructions to do this are contained in your confirmation email and via QR code links in the instruction manuals that come with all our tests.

How do I receive my results and what information is shown on the certificate?

All registered test results will be sent to you securely by text and email including a PDF you can download. Your certificate will show your full name, date of birth, ID credentials, date and time of test, and issue date. It will also be signed by our Medical Director, Dr. Jeremy Harris GMC: 3076541.

What are the possible results of my PCR and Antigen tests?

Negative: You do not have any evidence of an active COVID-19 infection.

Positive: The virus that causes COVID-19 has been detected on your swab. You will need to self-isolate for 10 days in accordance with government guidance.

Unclear: On rare occasions, it might not be possible to say if you had the virus when your test was done. In the event of this happening please contact us, quote your order number and we will arrange a retest.

Are PCR and Antigen tests safe for children?

Yes, children of any age can take a PCR or Antigen test, however children under the age of 18 to have parental consent. Please check your point of destination as different countries have different requirements for children.
