What does the UK's "Traffic Light System" for travel mean and what do I have to do?

As overseas travel can take place from 17 May, the government has devised a traffic light system which classifies international travel destinations based on Covid-19 risks. Countries may be red, amber plus, amber, or green. Each colour corresponds to specific rules when returning to the UK.

What do the three colours of the UK’s ‘Traffic Light System’ for travel mean?

  • Red: You must pay for a 10-day stay in a managed quarantine hotel, as well as a pre-departure test and two PCR tests upon return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8).
  • Amber Plus: You will need to quarantine for 10 days, as well as taking a pre-departure test, and two PCR tests on return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8). Optionally you can take a test on Day 5 (Test to Release) to leave quarantine early.
  • Amber: You will need to quarantine for 10 days, as well as taking a pre-departure test, and two PCR tests on return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8). Optionally you can take a test on Day 5 (Test to Release) to leave quarantine early. Individuals vaccinated in the UK, EU, or USA are exempt from quarantine but must still take a pre-departure test and Day 2 PCR test on return to the UK.
  • Green: You will not need to quarantine on return, but you must take a pre-departure test, and a PCR test on return to the UK on Day 2.

How will the government decide which countries go on the green, amber or red lists?

Countries are assigned to the four lists, based on a range of Covid-19 health metrics, which include figures on population vaccination, infection rates and prevalence of variants. The different traffic light statuses indicate the risk in each destination and the associated tests and quarantine periods required. Lists are reassessed every three weeks, to account for changes in each country’s COVID-19 situation.

What is Test to Release?

Test to release is a government scheme that allows you to end self isolation 4 days early if you have a negative COVID-19 PCR test result. We are a leading approved provider of these tests which are only available privately.

If you book an outbound Fit to Fly test with us, we'll give you a 10% discount on your returning Test to Release Test.

If you're returning to the UK and you want to leave quarantine early you’ll need to take a Test to Release test at least 5 days after your arrival in addition to the mandatory Day 2 & Day 8 Travel Test Package tests. You can book your Travel Test Package with us here.

Is it mandatory to purchase a Test to Release test?

No, Test to Release is voluntary if you want to end your self-isolation up to 5 days early.

Do I still need to self isolate while waiting for my test results?

Yes, you must continue to self-isolate until you have received a negative test result.

Am I guaranteed to end my self-isolation early if I take a Test to Release test?

Yes, if you receive a negative test result for COVID-19. You will not be able to reduce your quarantine if you test positive for COVID-19.

Are you recognised by the UK Government and are you accredited?

We’re a leading UK government recognised provider of all private COVID-19 tests. Our tests are analysed at UKAS accredited labs that comply to ISO15189 and ISO17025 standards.

What are the possible results of my PCR test?

Negative: You do not have any evidence of an active COVID-19 infection.

Positive: The virus that causes COVID-19 has been detected on your swab. You will need to self-isolate for 10 days in accordance with government guidance.

Unclear: On rare occasions, it might not be possible to say if you had the virus when your test was done. In the event of this happening please contact us, quote your order number and we will arrange a retest.

What happens if I break quarantine without a Test to Release test?

Breaking quarantine early without a Test to Release test can result in a fine of up to £10,000.

What is this bundle for?

UK arrivals from amber listed countries that are not vaccinated in the UK, EU or USA are required by law to quarantine for 10 days, unless they pay to shorten their quarantine with an early release test. The bundle includes the mandatory PCR Day 2 and Day 8 tests to be completed at home and sent to the lab using a Royal Mail priority returns post box - all instructions are included with the test kits.

Do I still need to take my Day 8 test if I return a negative Day 5 test to release result?

Yes, you must still complete your Day 8 test even if you have ended quarantine due to early release. Not completing your mandatory tests could put you in breach of government regulations with a possible fine.

What happens if I register the wrong test type during the registration process?

If you have accidentally registered the wrong barcode or test type please contact our customer support team so we can assist you in registering your test correctly.

How is a PCR test taken?

A throat and nose swab sample is taken using the kit provided. We have clear instructions on how to do this that come with your test bundle, with video tutorials available from the links in the instruction leaflet.

Can I use a Day 2 or Day 8 test as a Fit to Fly?

No - The various tests analyse different outcomes which are specific to that test type. If you register the wrong test type your results may not be valid. The Day 2 & 8 tests are government mandated and not doing them upon your return could put you in breach of government regulations with a possible fine.

What is the Day 2 & Day 8 Travel Test Package?

If you’re arriving in the UK from abroad you’ll need to quarantine for 10 days and take a Covid-19 PCR test on or before Day 2 and on or after Day 8 of your self-isolation. These tests are compulsory for all international arrivals outside of the UK, Ireland, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. If you want to leave quarantine early you’ll need to take a Test to Release test in addition to the Day 2 and Day 8 tests. You can buy a home kit for this additional test here or book an in person test at one of our clinics here. Remember you must still conduct your Day 8 test in accordance with the government’s rules for international arrivals even if your Test to Release test is negative.

What do I need to do before I travel to England?

Take a COVID-19 test and get a negative result during the 72 hours before you travel.

If you are coming from a green list country, you must book and pay for a Day 2 test which must be taken on or before day 2 following your arrival in England. Quarantine is not required when arriving to the UK from a green list country.

If you have not been fully vaccinated in the UK, EU, or USA at least 14 days ago and are coming from an amber list or red list country, you must book and pay for a Day 2 and Day 8 test package, which includes COVID-19 tests to be taken on or before Day 2 and on or after Day 8 of your quarantine. Individuals who have been fully vaccinated in the UK, EU, or USA more than 14 days ago are exempt from quarantine but must still take a pre-departure test and Day 2 PCR test on return to the UK.

Complete a passenger locator form with details of where you will quarantine when you arrive and the Day 2 and Day 8 test package booking reference number.

When can I take my Day 2 and Day 8 tests?

You can take your Day 2 test any time on or before day 2 following your arrival in England. You can take your Day 8 test on or after day 8.

How do the Day 2 & Day 8 PCR tests differ from normal PCR tests?

The Day 2 & Day 8 tests are the most accurate PCR tests available and are mandatory when coming back to the UK because of the growing threat from new variants of COVID-19. The tests look for 2 genes rather than 1 which makes it a more complicated test and, if the Day 2 test is found to be positive it is sent for genome sequencing to identify particular variants of concern.

What are the possible results of my Day 2 & Day 8 tests?

Negative: You do not have any evidence of an active COVID-19 infection.

Positive: The virus that causes COVID-19 has been detected on your swab. You will need to self-isolate for 10 days in accordance with government guidance.

Unclear: On rare occasions, it might not be possible to say if you had the virus when your test was done. This is because it's possible that 1 of the genes specific to the COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) virus has been found.

What happens if I test positive in either of the Day 2 or Day 8 tests?

If your Day 2 or Day 8 test results are positive then you must quarantine for an additional 10 days from the day you took the test – further advice will be provided with your test results. Please see the government website for more information.

What happens if I test unclear in either of the Day 2 or Day 8 tests?

Your coronavirus test result is unclear. It’s not possible to say if you had the virus when the test was done. This is because it’s possible that 1 of the genes specific to the COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) virus has been found.

This can be due to several different reasons including inadequate sample collection, very early stage-infection, or very late stage-infection (i.e. you may have recently tested positive for COVID-19).

Both gene targets must be identified to declare a positive result. We follow retest procedures where our tests produce an unclear result, however, sometimes even with repeat testing the result remains the same.

Day 2 Unclear Result

If you took this test on day 2 of your quarantine you must continue to quarantine until you have completed the 10-day quarantine period AND received a negative test result for a test taken on day 8.

You may be contacted to check that you, and those who you live or are travelling with, are self-isolating. You must not travel, including to leave the UK, during self-isolation.

You MUST still undertake your Day 8 test.

Day 8 Unclear Result

Even if you have not had symptoms of coronavirus, you must quarantine for a further 10 days, beginning the day after the test was taken.

As this test was taken on day 8 of arriving in the UK a further 10 days means you will need to continue quarantine until day 19 after arriving in the UK.

People you live with or are travelling with will also need to quarantine for a further 10 days (until day 19), irrespective of any test result they may have recently had.

You may be contacted for contact tracing and to check that you, and those who you live or are travelling with, are self-isolating. You must not travel, including to leave the UK, during self-isolation.

Are you approved by the UK Government and are you accredited?

We’re a leading UK government approved provider of all private COVID-19 tests. Our tests are analysed at UKAS accredited labs that comply to ISO15189 and ISO17025 standards.

What happens if I fail to take a test?

The Day 2 & Day 8 tests are mandatory. Failure to take these tests can result in a fine of up to £2000.

Is it mandatory to purchase this travel test package?

This travel test package includes tests that are mandatory, the Day 2 and Day 8 tests included in the travel test package are mandatory for anyone travelling into the UK from an amber or red listed country. Failure to take the tests can result in a fine.

The test to release in this package is an optional test you can take to end quarantine 4 days early if you have a negative COVID-19 PCR test result.

Please note that travellers from amber list countries who have been fully vaccinated at least 14 days ago in the UK, EU, or USA do not need to quarantine, test to release, or take a day 8 test. Fully vaccinated travelers must still take a pre-departure test and Day 2 PCR test on return to the UK.
