As overseas travel can take place from 17 May, the government has devised a traffic light system which classifies international travel destinations based on Covid-19 risks. Countries may be red, amber plus, amber, or green. Each colour corresponds to specific rules when returning to the UK.
What do the three colours of the UK’s ‘Traffic Light System’ for travel mean?
- Red: You must pay for a 10-day stay in a managed quarantine hotel, as well as a pre-departure test and two PCR tests upon return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8).
- Amber Plus: You will need to quarantine for 10 days, as well as taking a pre-departure test, and two PCR tests on return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8). Optionally you can take a test on Day 5 (Test to Release) to leave quarantine early.
- Amber: You will need to quarantine for 10 days, as well as taking a pre-departure test, and two PCR tests on return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8). Optionally you can take a test on Day 5 (Test to Release) to leave quarantine early. Individuals vaccinated in the UK, EU, or USA are exempt from quarantine but must still take a pre-departure test and Day 2 PCR test on return to the UK.
- Green: You will not need to quarantine on return, but you must take a pre-departure test, and a PCR test on return to the UK on Day 2.
How will the government decide which countries go on the green, amber or red lists?
Countries are assigned to the four lists, based on a range of Covid-19 health metrics, which include figures on population vaccination, infection rates and prevalence of variants. The different traffic light statuses indicate the risk in each destination and the associated tests and quarantine periods required. Lists are reassessed every three weeks, to account for changes in each country’s COVID-19 situation.

What is Test to Release?
Test to release is a government scheme that allows you to end self isolation 4 days early if you have a negative COVID-19 PCR test result. We are a leading approved provider of these tests which are only available privately.

If you're returning to the UK and you want to leave quarantine early you’ll need to take a Test to Release test at least 5 days after your arrival in addition to the mandatory Day 2 & Day 8 Travel Test Package tests. You can book your Travel Test Package with us here.
What if I’m coming from a ‘Red List’ country?
If you arrive from a country that is on the Gov.uk banned list during the last 10 days you must pay for a 10-day stay in a managed quarantine hotel, as well as a pre-departure test and two PCR tests upon return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8). You will only be allowed to enter the UK if you are a British or Irish national or you have residence rights in the UK. Am I allowed to travel to the clinic for my test?
Yes, you can travel to our clinics during self isolation if it’s for the purpose of taking a test but you must return to your quarantine location as soon as this is complete.
Your test will be conducted in one of our clinics in London, Watford, Manchester or Newcastle.
Is it mandatory to purchase a Test to Release test?
No, Test to Release is voluntary if you want to end your self-isolation 4 days early.
Do I still need to self isolate while waiting for my test results?
Yes, you must continue to self-isolate until you have received a negative test result.
Am I guaranteed to end my self-isolation early if I take a Test to Release test?
Yes, if you receive a negative test result for COVID-19. You will not be able to reduce your quarantine if you test positive for COVID-19.

How quickly can I get results back?
By 23:59 for Same Day tests and by 18:00 for Next Day tests. All test samples are analysed 7 days a week and you’ll get your results as soon as they’re released.
What are the possible results of my PCR test?
Negative: You do not have any evidence of an active COVID-19 infection.
Positive: The virus that causes COVID-19 has been detected on your swab. You will need to self-isolate for 10 days in accordance with government guidance.
Unclear: On rare occasions, it might not be possible to say if you had the virus when your test was done. In the event of this happening, you’ll need to come in again for a retest. We offer all retests free of charge.
What happens if I break quarantine without a Test to Release test?
Breaking quarantine early without a Test to Release test can result in a fine of up to £10,000.
