What does the UK's "Traffic Light System" for travel mean and what do I have to do?

As overseas travel can take place from 17 May, the government has devised a traffic light system which classifies international travel destinations based on Covid-19 risks. Countries may be red, amber, or green. Each colour corresponds to specific rules when returning to the UK.

What do the three colours of the UK’s ‘Traffic Light System’ for travel mean?

  • Red: You must pay for a 10-day stay in a managed quarantine hotel, as well as a pre-departure test and two PCR tests upon return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8).
  • Amber: You will need to quarantine for 10 days, as well as taking a pre-departure test, and two PCR tests on return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8). Optionally you can take a test on Day 5 (Test to Release) to leave quarantine early.
  • Green: You will not need to quarantine on return, but you must take a pre-departure test, and a PCR test on return to the UK on Day 2.

How will the government decide which countries go on the green, amber or red lists?

Countries are assigned to the three lists, based on a range of Covid-19 health metrics, which include figures on population vaccination, infection rates and prevalence of variants. The different traffic light colours indicate the risk in each destination and the associated tests and quarantine periods required. Lists are reassessed every three weeks, to account for changes in each country’s COVID-19 situation.

Before you travel to England you must
On arrival in England you must
Red List
  • Complete a passenger locator form
  • Take a COVID-19 test
  • Book a quarantine hotel package (including 2 COVID-19 tests)
  • Quarantine in a managed hotel, including 2 COVID-19 tests
Amber List
  • Complete a passenger locator form
  • Take a COVID-19 test
  • Book Day 2 and Day 8 COVID-19 travel tests (to be taken after arrival in England)
  • Quarantine at home/place you are staying for 10 days
  • Take a COVID-19 test on/before Day 2 and on/after Day 8
  • You may be able to end quarantine early through ‘Test to Release’
Green List
  • Complete a passenger locator form
  • Take a COVID-19 test
  • Book a Day 2 COVID-19 test
  • Take a COVID-19 test on/before Day 2 after you arrive
  • You do not need to quarantine unless the test result is positive.

What does the test do and how accurate is it?

An Antigen test looks for viral surface proteins of the virus. It will confirm if you currently have the virus. It will not confirm whether you have had it and have developed an immune response - there are other tests available for that (see our antibody test). It’s a faster and cheaper alternative to a PCR test and has an accuracy of 93.8%.

How is the test taken?

A nose swab sample is taken by one of our healthcare professionals at one of our clinics in London, Watford, Manchester and Newcastle.

Where can I get a test?

You can book an Antigen test online for any of our clinics in London, Watford, Manchester and Newcastle. At each clinic we have healthcare professionals who administer your tests.

Does an antigen test include a Fit to Fly certificate and is an antigen test suitable for travel?

An antigen fit to fly test does include a Fit to Fly Certificate. Antigen tests are not suitable for all travel destinations. Some countries require a PCR Fit to Fly test instead. We recommend you check your specific destination requirements here.

How soon before my flight should I be tested?

Time windows are normally given by your airline or the country you are flying to. For example, a 72 hour time window means that your swab needs to be taken within 72 hours of your flight. We recommend you check your specific destination requirements here.

How quickly can I get results back?

Antigen test results are delivered by 22:00 on the same day you take your test. All test samples are analysed 7 days a week and you’ll get your results as soon as they’re released.

What format do I receive my results in and what information is shown on the certificate?

Your test results will be sent to you securely by text and email including a PDF you can download. Your certificate will show your full name, date of birth, passport number (optional), date and time of test, and issue date. It will also be signed by our Medical Director, Dr. Jeremy Harris GMC: 3076541.

What are the possible results of my antigen test?

Negative: You do not have any evidence of an active COVID-19 infection.

Positive: The virus that causes COVID-19 has been detected on your swab. You will need to self-isolate for 10 days in accordance with government guidance.

Unclear: On rare occasions, it might not be possible to say if you had the virus when your test was done. In the event of this happening, you’ll need to come in again for a retest. We offer all retests free of charge.

What type of antigen test do you use?

We use Boditech Med Covid-19 antigen tests.

Why should I take an antigen test?

Antigen tests are helpful in screening for mild, asymptomatic or acute patients for the identification of a Covid-19 infection.

Why should I have my test with Corona Test Centre?
