All international arrivals must take a Day 2 Covid-19 test on or before day 2 after arriving in the UK (your arrival date is considered Day 0). If you are fully vaccinated you must take a Day 2 Lateral Flow test or Day 2 PCR test. If you are not fully vaccinated you must take a Day 2 PCR test, need to quarantine and take an additional PCR test on Day 8. A Day 2 test is compulsory for all international arrivals outside of the UK, Ireland, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.
The Day 2 Lateral Flow test is mandatory for fully vaccinated travellers when returning to the UK and includes a code for your passenger locator form, which you are required to fill out before your return.
A Lateral Flow test is an antigen test, which looks for viral surface proteins of the virus. It will confirm if you currently have the virus. It’s a faster and cheaper alternative to a PCR test and has an accuracy of 98%.The Day 2 PCR test is the most accurate PCR test available looks for 2 genes rather than 1 which makes it a more complicated test and, if the Day 2 test is found to be positive it is sent for genome sequencing to identify particular variants of concern.Fully vaccinated travellers can choose to take either a Day 2 Lateral Flow or Day 2 PCR test, while unvaccinated travellers must take a Day 2 PCR test.
An Antigen test looks for viral surface proteins of the virus. It will confirm if you currently have the virus. It will not confirm whether you have had it and have developed an immune response - there are other tests available for that (see our antibody test). It’s a faster and cheaper alternative to a PCR test and has an accuracy of 98%.
The Day 2 test is mandatory. Failure to take the test can result in a fine of up to £1,000. If you are fully vaccinated you must take either a Day 2 Lateral Flow test or Day 2 PCR test. If you are unvaccinated you must take a Day 2 PCR test.
The UK has removed all countries from the Red List and currently does not impose different entry requirements depending on where you are travelling from. Entry requirements depend on whether or not you are fully vaccinated. However, this may be subject to change if countries are again added to the ‘Red List’. In this case, if you arrive to the UK and have been in a country on the red list during the last 10 days you must pay for a 10-day stay in a managed quarantine hotel, as well as a pre-departure test and two PCR tests upon return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8). You will only be allowed to enter the UK if you are a British or Irish national or you have residence rights in the UK. You can find more information relating to red list countries on the UK government's website.
If your Day 2 Lateral Flow test is positive, you will need to self-isolate for an additional 10 days from the day you took the test and take a free NHS confirmatory PCR test. Further advice will be provided with your test results.
