You will need to quarantine for 10 days, as well as taking a pre-departure test before you arrive in the UK (a Return PCR or Antigen Fit to Fly test), and two PCR tests on return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8). When you return to the UK, you can take a test on Day 5 (Test to Release) to leave quarantine early.
*If you were fully vaccinated in the UK at least 14 days ago, you do not need to quarantine, but still need to take a pre-departure test before arriving in the UK (a Return PCR or Antigen Fit to Fly test), and one PCR test on return to the UK (Day 2).

Can You Travel To France?

The UK is currently on the French amber list. Entry requirements are different depending on whether you are fully vaccinated or not.

Unvaccinated (or not fully vaccinated) arrivals are only permitted to travel for essential reasons (from the list specified for this category of country). Those who are not fully vaccinated will also need to present the following documents:

  • a completed International Travel Certificate to confirm their essential reason for travel. In exceptional circumstances, the French Consulate in London may be able to assist with travel for an essential reason not listed on the International Travel Certificate
  • a completed ‘sworn statement’ (déclaration sur l’honneur) form self-certifying they are not suffering from symptoms associated with coronavirus and have not been in contact with confirmed cases in the preceding fortnight, and that they will self-isolate for seven days after arrival.

Arrivals aged 12 or over a are required to present evidence of a negative test (PCR or antigen) taken within 24 hours of departure. Arrivals from most other amber countries will need evidence of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of departure or an antigen test taken within 48 hours of departure.

Children who are travelling with a fully vaccinated adult will be exempt from requirements to present a negative test result, self-isolate and provide an essential reason for travel, regardless of whether the minor has been vaccinated or not.

Travellers who are not fully vaccinated will need to self-isolate for 7 days after arrival, then take another PCR test following this period of self-isolation.

Fully vaccinated travellers do not need an essential reason to travel, present a negative COVID test, or isolate on arrival. More details on the requirements for fully vaccinated travellers can be found in the relevant FAQ on this page.

Return to the UK
Please note that while the UK has implemented new rules for returning passengers from amber list countries, these do not apply to travellers coming from France. If you have been in France in the 10 days before you arrive in England you must quarantine for 10 days on arrival in England and take day 2 and day 8 COVID-19 tests, regardless of your UK vaccination status. See the relevant section 'What must I do when returning to the UK' for further details (on this page).

Local Measures
From 21 July, people attending events and cultural spaces with over 50 people will be asked to demonstrate their COVID-19 status through the "pass sanitaire". This can be acquired by fulfilling one of the following three criteria:

  • A vaccination certificate, illustrating that you are fully vaccinated with a vaccine authorised by the European Medical Authority. This means:
    • 7 days after a second dose of Oxford/AstraZeneca, Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna
    • 28 days after a single dose of Johnson & Johnson
    • 7 days after a single injection for those able to demonstrate they have already been infected (this only applies to those vaccinated in France)
  • A negative PCR or antigen test result from the last 48 hours
  • A document (dated more than 11 days ago and less than six months ago) proving recovery from COVID

From 1 August, you will need this to access a range of leisure facilities (bars, restaurants, museums, cinemas), hospitals, retirement homes and modes of transport such as long-distance train and bus journeys and planes. Those aged 12 to 17 will only be subject to this requirement from 30 September.

You can find more information on how to access the "pass sanitaire" from the French government. For those visiting France after being vaccinated in England, you can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated by downloading the "TousAntiCovid" app and clicking on the option "Scan a QR code" to scan the QR code from you digital NHS vaccination certification.

You should visit the French Interior Ministry website or use the ‘Tous anti-Covid’ digital app for further information.

Travelling To France FAQs

Advice and answers from the Corona Test Centre Team

What do the three colours of the UK’s ‘Traffic Light System’ for travel mean?

  • Red: You must pay for a 10-day stay in a managed quarantine hotel, as well as taking a pre-departure test (a Fit to Fly test) and two PCR tests upon return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8).
  • Amber: You will need to quarantine for 10 days, as well as taking a pre-departure test (a Fit to Fly test), and two PCR tests on return to the UK (Day 2 & Day 8). When you return to the UK,  you can take a test on Day 5 (Test to Release) to leave quarantine early.
  • Green: You will not need to quarantine on return, but you must take a pre-departure test (a Fit to Fly test), and a PCR test on return to the UK on Day 2.

How will the government decide which countries go on the green, amber or red lists?

Countries are assigned to the three lists, based on a range of Covid-19 health metrics, which include figures on population vaccination, infection rates and prevalence of variants. The different traffic light colours indicate the risk in each destination and the associated tests and quarantine periods required. Lists are reassessed every three weeks, to account for changes in each country’s COVID-19 situation.

Will I need a PCR Fit to Fly Certificate to travel to

France

?

The PCR test is the gold standard for testing coronavirus and so is recommended for travel to all countries. For France, PCR Fit to Fly Certificates are accepted, alternatively you can travel with an Antigen Fit to Fly Certificate, or if you have been vaccinated, France will accept this as proof.

Will I need an Antigen Fit to Fly Certificate to travel to

France

?

France accepts vaccination as an entry requirement and so you may not need to provide a PCR or Antigen Fit to Fly Certificate. However, to ensure that you and the people you meet when travelling are safe, we always recommend taking a PCR or Antigen test before travel.

Will I need a Day 2 test or Day 2 and 8 when I return to the UK?

Franceis currently on the amber list, this means that you will need a Day 2 PCR test and a Day 8 PCR test. You will need to buy this before you travel to the UK and use the reference code on your passenger location form. You will need to quarantine on arrival for 10 days. If you would like the opportunity to leave quarantine early, you can also book a Test to Release test. Please note that the travel restrictions are subject to change at very short notice.

I’m vaccinated, what tests do I need?

France is currently on the amber list, this means that you will need a Day 2 PCR test and a Day 8 PCR test. However, because you have both vaccinations, you can return to the UK and only take a Day 2 PCR test. You will need to buy this before you travel to the UK and use the reference code on your passenger location form. You will not need to quarantine on arrival for 10 days (unless you test positive). Please note that the travel restrictions are subject to change at very short notice.

Can I enter

France

with a double vaccination certificate?

France accepts vaccination as an entry requirement and so you may not need to provide a PCR or Antigen Fit to Fly Certificate

What happens if I have visited another country before flying back to the UK from

France

?

The government advice for passengers travelling from France is that if you have visited another country in the 10 days before you arrive in the UK that is a higher risk than France, you must follow the travel guidance for the highest risk country you visited.

What else will I need to return to the UK?

For all countries, including France, you will need to take an Antigen Fit to Fly test before departing for the UK. This can be bought at Corona Test Centre’s to take with you on your travels.
